Gordon Delamont

Gordon Delamont

Born: October 17, 1918
Died: January 18, 1981

Born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, he grew up in the Vancouver area, where his father directed the University of British Columbia bands and an internationally acclaimed jazz band called The Kitsilano Boys' Band. Gordon played trumpet in the latter for several years, but in 1949 began teaching jazz composition and arranging in Toronto.

His series of books on the subject, published by Kendor between 1965 and 1976, are required texts in leading universities and colleges the world over. In recent years they've also been published in Japanese and Italian translations.

Until his death, Delamont typically spent his days teaching from 10:30 in the morning till 7:30 at night. Some of his former students include Rob McConnell of Boss Brass fame, Grover Mitchell (trombonist with Count Basie), noted writer Ron Collier, and hundreds more. Among his outstanding compositions, Gordon's "Collage No. 3" and "Song And Dance" were performed and recorded by Duke Ellington.
