Following the phenomenal success of his album In The Christmas Mood by the Glenn Miller Orchestra, LaBarbera sets his sights on a Basie Christmas. This version of Midnight Clear swings from beat one. John says in his score notes that directors should think Basie with just a touch of Bach and the chart will play itself. Piano interjects solo material in several places, including a pair of straight-8th interludes for stylistic contrast.

Drummer Joe LaBarbera pays homage to Art Blakey in this wonderful number arranged by brother John. Trumpet, tenor and trombone can be featured in front of the band throughout, and the drummer has lots of great opportunities for soloing, starting with an open solo at the beginning and finishing with several dramatic fills at the end. The solo section can also be opened up at the director's discretion.
