Budd Udell

Born: April 4, 1934

With degrees from Indiana University (BM, MME) and the University of Cincinnati (DMA Composition), Dr. Udell's professional activities have taken him in diverse directions through the years. In 1958-61, he was composer/arranger for the U.S. Navy Band in Washington, D.C. He then became Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Bands at West Virginia University (1963-1970), followed by a two-year tenure at the University of Cincinnati as Assistant Professor of Composition and Theory, Assistant Dean, and Conductor of the Cincinnati Wind Ensemble.

From 1974-77 Dr. Udell served as National Executive Director of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA). During this same time he was the Managing Director of the organization's official journal, "The American Music Teacher." From 1977 until his recent retirement, Udell was Professor of Music Emeritus and served as Chairman of the Department of Music (1977 - 1985), Head of Composition and Music Theory (1987-1998), and Director of Graduate Studies (1998-2001) at the University of Florida in Gainesville.
