Born: September 24, 1921
A native of Buffalo, NY, he attended the Eastman School of Music, where he obtained his Ph.D. degree and Performance Certificate on flute and studied composition with Howard Hanson and Wayne Barlow. He later pursued advanced studies at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria.
Highlights of his professional career as a flute/saxophone performer include positions with the U.S. Army Air Force Band in Washington, D.C., the Sauter-Finnegan Orchestra, and the Glenn Miller Air Force Orchestra. He was also principal flutist with the Corpus Christi (TX) Symphony Orchestra, the Buffalo Philharmonic Summer Pops and the Buffalo Symphonette.
In 1953 he joined the music faculty at the University of Buffalo as head of the theoretical and instrumental divisions. He served as conductor of the University Little Symphony (10 years), University Bands (6 years), and flutist/director of the Faculty Wind Quintet for nine years. In 1958 he founded the Western New York Youth Orchestra (now the Greater Buffalo Youth Orchestra) and served as its conductor for three seasons. Later he conducted the Cheektowaga and Batavia Symphonies and guest conducted the Buffalo Philharmonic.
Currently he is Professor Emeritus at SUNY/Buffalo,
